Volunteer

Are you interested in giving back to the family history community? This page lists a variety of projects where your efforts can make a positive difference.

Because of significant problems with projects that add fragments to Family Tree (tiny, disconnected trees of about 3 – 10 people), or that encourage people to attach sources without context or verification, this page will not list these types of projects.

Watch for more projects to be added in the future.

Family History Websites

Script Tutorial Site

This project involves some transcription, verifying transcriptions, checking links, and writing a short history of some documents on the site. If you are interested, contact Dr. Amy Harris.

Probate Information on English Ancestors Site

This project involves checking and updating links, adding links to new collections on other family history websites, and adding descriptions of record collections. Volunteers should know levels of English probate. If you are interested, contact Dr. Amy Harris.

Historical Record Transcription

American Ancestors Projects

American Ancestors sponsors various projects, including the 10 Million Names project to document the lives of African Americans.

Bertram Merrell's Index of English Marriages (1750 – 1836)

Volunteers are needed to help standardize English place names for Bertram Merrell's Index of English Marriages. Volunteers should have a basic familiarity with English place names and with county abbreviations. If you are interested, contact Dr. Amy Harris.

British and Irish Censuses, pre-1841

This project involves transcribing pre-1841 census records. Volunteers should be familiar with 19th Century English handwriting. Extensive research experience is not required; however, volunteers should be detail-oriented and willing to follow project rules. This video provides more information. If you are interested, contact Dr. Amy Harris.

English Parish Registers

Parish registers are a key resource for English research. Help make more parish registers searchable by volunteering with FreeReg or Lancashire Online Parish Clerks.

Equity Court Records

For this project, volunteers verify and transcribe English Equity Court indexes from the 1600s and 1700s. These records are not currently available anywhere online. The indexes lead to genealogically rich sources in a time period when few other records are available. If you are interested, contact Kathryn Grant.

FreeBMD Civil Registration Indexes

Volunteer with the Free UK Genealogy team to transcribe indexes for civil birth, marriage, and death registrations.

Geneanet Projects

Geneanet offers traditional projects, such as indexing historical records and transcribing grave markers. You'll also find some unique projects, such as the collaborative tree of the Filles du roy (King's Daughters) and the Now and Then historical postcards project.

Family History Writing

Write Short Biographies

This project is a good fit for volunteers who enjoy family history and writing. Volunteers will use bullet lists about historical individuals to create a more enjoyable, accessible biography. Volunteers will also use their creativity to add details about the place and time in which the person lived. If you are interested, contact Dr. Amy Harris.
